H is for Hair Fairy: An Alphabet of Encouragement and Insight for Kids (and Kids at Heart!) with Cancer
An alphabet book with a mission, this 32-page picture book will inspire, comfort, educate and encourage children being treated for cancer. Using colorful, warm, humorous illustrations and verse, the author employs the alphabet to feature different aspects of coping with cancer treatment. Many pages include practical information about where to find help or relief for children at this challenging time in their lives. Mr. and Mrs. Hair Fairy, creations of the author, are a humorous pair who visit cancer patients on the day they lose their hair and leave them a gift. They also watch over cancer patients and guide us through this heartwarming book of encouragement. Although written for children, the book is great for people of all ages. H is for Hair Fairy: An Alphabet of Encouragement and Insight for Kids (and Kids at Heart!) With Cancer kicks off the Hair Fairy Project created by the author in memory of her son, Nolan (1985-1993), who went through cancer twice before the age of eight, and in honor of her 17-year-old daughter Andrea, a cancer survivor, who finished treatment for bone cancer in 2004. This non-profit project brings joy and encouragement to children with cancer.

Cancer: A Great Concern for Thyroid Patients
Subtitle: “Malignancies Affecting the Metabolic Butterfly” (approximately 5,854 words in length)

Many thyroid disease patients become aware of the fact that they are at an increased risk for developing thyroid malignancy but they are unsure how much that risk increases following diagnosis of their thyroid condition. Within the chapters of this book that follow, I offer information regarding these increased risk factors, backed by reputable medical information sources. Also included is information regarding thyroid cancer prevention, detection and treatments.

I believe this information may offer some comfort to thyroid disease patients but it will also help them to know what to look for regarding signs and symptoms of these higher-risk diseases and possibly to know what blood tests or other medical evaluations they may wish to request from their doctors should they suspect the possible onset of a malignant thyroid disease. I am including quotes from medical research studies found on the U.S. National Institutes of Health website (reprints allowed for educational purposes).

Being aware of the medical possibilities and how they may manifest, through self-education, is part of what we in Thyroid Patient Advocacy refer-to as being “a proactive thyroid patient” and by doing so, one can help to secure a better quality of life for the sake of their selves and their families.
